We do not attempt to reidentify properly de-identified information except when reasonably necessary to test whether the de-identification process is effective or as otherwise permitted by law.
Legal Bases for Processing Where Applicable
Some jurisdictions require us to identify a legal basis for processing personal information. Depending on the circumstances, our legal bases may include:
Legitimate interests: Operating and securing the website, improving our content, responding to communications, preserving editorial accuracy, preventing misuse, administering affiliate relationships, and maintaining appropriate business records, provided those interests are not overridden by a person’s rights.
Consent: Using nonessential cookies or other technologies, or processing information for another purpose for which consent is requested, where consent is required by law.
Performance of a contract or steps requested before a contract: Managing a vendor, affiliate, professional, or service-provider relationship.
Legal obligation: Maintaining records, responding to lawful requests, and meeting regulatory, tax, accounting, security, or legal duties.
Vital interests in limited circumstances: Protecting a person’s life or physical safety when the law recognizes this basis and the person cannot provide consent. Fraud prevention, security, and legal claims are ordinarily addressed through legitimate interests or legal obligations instead.
When processing is based on consent, consent may be withdrawn for future processing, subject to legal and technical limitations. Withdrawal does not affect processing that was lawful before consent was withdrawn.
Website Platform and Service Providers
Companion Safety Lane is built and hosted on the Wix platform. Wix may process technical, usage, security, cookie, and other information to host, deliver, protect, and support the website and its functions. Information may be stored or processed in locations where Wix or its service providers operate.
Other service providers may assist with functions such as:
Website hosting, content delivery, storage, and maintenance.
Website analytics, diagnostics, and performance measurement.
Security, fraud prevention, spam prevention, and attack detection.
Email and communications.
Affiliate-link administration, referral measurement, and commission reporting.
Professional legal, accounting, technical, or editorial services.
Service providers may process information only as permitted by their agreements, their own legal obligations, and applicable law. Some providers may act as independent businesses or controllers for particular activities. Their privacy notices may also apply.
Cookies and Similar Technologies
Cookies are small files placed on a browser or device. Companion Safety Lane, Wix, and other service providers may also use pixels, tags, local storage, software development tools, server logs, and similar technologies.
Essential, Security, and Functional Technologies
These technologies may be used to:
Load and display pages correctly.
Maintain website security and stability.
Detect attacks, malicious traffic, or automated misuse.
Balance website traffic and support reliable delivery.
Remember basic settings or privacy preferences.
Support accessibility or other requested functions.
Some of these technologies are necessary for the website to operate. Blocking them through a browser may cause parts of the website to function improperly.
Analytics and Performance Technologies
Analytics and performance technologies may help us understand:
Which pages and educational resources are visited.
How visitors navigate through the website.
Whether pages load and display properly.
What broad categories of devices and browsers are used.
Whether broken links, errors, or usability problems occur.
We use this information to evaluate and improve the website. Analytics information may involve online identifiers and may be treated as personal information under some laws.
Affiliate Referral Technologies
Affiliate links may include referral parameters or identifiers. After a visitor intentionally selects an affiliate link, the destination manufacturer, retailer, or affiliate network may use cookies or similar technologies to recognize the referral and determine whether a qualifying purchase or other event occurs.
The destination party determines its own cookie duration, information practices, and attribution rules. Its privacy policy and cookie notice govern its independent processing. Companion Safety Lane does not control cookies placed by a third party after a visitor reaches that party’s website or service.
Cross-Site and Third-Party Collection
Wix, analytics providers, embedded-service providers, affiliate partners, and other third parties may collect information through their technologies when a person uses Companion Safety Lane. Depending on the provider and its configuration, that information may include online activity over time and across different websites, applications, or services.
Companion Safety Lane does not control a third party’s independent use of information. Visitors should review the privacy and cookie notices of the relevant provider. This disclosure is not intended to state that every provider performs cross-site tracking, but to make clear that such collection may occur when third-party technology is present and configured to do so.
Cookie Choices
Where a cookie-preference control is displayed, visitors may use it to manage the categories it offers. Visitors may also use browser or device settings to block, limit, or delete cookies. Choices may need to be applied separately to each browser and device and may not affect technologies that are not browser cookies.
Blocking or deleting certain technologies may affect website functionality, saved preferences, analytics, or affiliate attribution. Cookies placed on a manufacturer’s, retailer’s, or other third party’s website must be managed through that third party or through browser and device controls.
Affiliate Marketing and Purchases
Companion Safety Lane participates in affiliate marketing programs. If a visitor intentionally follows an eligible link and completes a qualifying transaction, Companion Safety Lane may receive a commission from the applicable manufacturer, retailer, or affiliate network.
Companion Safety Lane does not sell the featured products, determine a third party’s eligibility requirements, process the transaction, fulfill the order, register the product, administer the product subscription, or handle the visitor’s payment information. Those activities are performed by the manufacturer, retailer, payment processor, or other provider under its own terms and privacy practices.
Questions involving purchases, refunds, shipping, warranties, product registration, subscriptions, mobile applications, device data, veterinary integrations, or customer accounts should be directed to the responsible third party.
Professional, Editorial, and Confidential Communications
Companion Safety Lane may retain communications from manufacturers, veterinarians, researchers, vendors, affiliate representatives, and other professional sources when reasonably necessary to verify facts, document corrections, administer a relationship, or preserve an appropriate editorial record.
We treat nonpublic professional correspondence with reasonable care and limit its use to legitimate editorial, business, legal, and security purposes. We do not intentionally publish a private individual’s personal contact information merely because that person contacted us.
However, submitting unsolicited information does not by itself create an attorney-client relationship, veterinary-client-patient relationship, fiduciary duty, nondisclosure agreement, confidential-source agreement, or other special legal relationship. Manufacturers, vendors, researchers, and other parties should not send trade secrets, embargoed information, privileged documents, or confidential commercial information unless confidentiality has been agreed to in writing in advance.
If a person provides a statement, correction, photograph, testimonial, professional opinion, or other material for possible publication, we may seek permission, confirm attribution, verify credentials, and retain a record of the authorization. We will not intentionally publish identifying details from a private pet-parent communication without permission unless the information is already lawfully public or disclosure is reasonably necessary to comply with law, protect safety, or defend legal rights.
Artificial Intelligence and Automated Processing
Companion Safety Lane may use technology-assisted tools, including artificial intelligence, to help organize public research, review grammar, evaluate readability, structure drafts, check consistency, or support other editorial and technical work.
We do not use automated systems to make decisions about visitors that produce legal or similarly significant effects. We do not intentionally use private visitor communications, passwords, payment information, veterinary records, or other sensitive personal information to train publicly available artificial-intelligence models.
If technology-assisted tools process personal information on our behalf, we seek to limit the information to what is reasonably necessary for the task and to use the information consistently with this policy and applicable law.
How We Disclose Information
We may disclose information to the following categories of recipients when reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy:
Wix and other website hosting, infrastructure, content-delivery, storage, maintenance, analytics, and security providers.
Email, communications, spam-prevention, and technical-support providers.
Affiliate networks, manufacturers, retailers, and referral-administration providers.
Contractors and professional advisers, including legal, accounting, security, technical, and editorial advisers.
Government authorities, regulators, law-enforcement agencies, courts, or other parties when required by law or valid legal process.
A person or organization involved in investigating fraud, misuse, a security incident, a credible safety concern, or a violation of legal rights.
A successor or participating party in connection with a potential or completed merger, reorganization, financing, transfer, sale, dissolution, or other transaction involving all or part of Companion Safety Lane or its assets.
Other parties at your direction or with your consent.
We may disclose aggregated or de-identified information that does not reasonably identify a person, subject to applicable law.
Sale, Sharing, and Targeted Advertising
Companion Safety Lane does not sell personal information for money. We do not knowingly provide personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing, and we do not operate our own interest-based advertising program.
Some privacy laws define “sale,” “sharing,” or “targeted advertising” broadly enough to include certain transfers of online identifiers through advertising, analytics, or tracking technologies, even when no money is exchanged. A particular technology's presence and legal classification depend on how it is configured and used.
An intentional click on an external affiliate link directs the visitor to interact with the selected manufacturer, retailer, affiliate network, or other destination. That third party’s collection and use of information are governed by its own privacy notice. If Companion Safety Lane later engages in an activity that legally constitutes selling or sharing personal information or using it for targeted advertising, we will provide the notices and opt-out methods required by applicable law.
Browser Privacy Signals
Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” setting. There is no single universally accepted standard governing how all websites respond to Do Not Track signals. Companion Safety Lane does not currently respond to ordinary Do Not Track signals.
Some jurisdictions recognize universal opt-out mechanisms, such as Global Privacy Control, for particular activities. Companion Safety Lane does not currently sell personal information for money or operate its own targeted-advertising program. Where applicable law requires a recognized signal to be treated as a request concerning an activity in which we engage, we will honor the signal as required. A visitor may also contact us directly to ask about an applicable opt-out right.
Third-Party Websites, Applications, and Devices
Companion Safety Lane may link to manufacturers, retailers, affiliate networks, mobile applications, veterinary organizations, research publications, government agencies, and other independent resources. An external link may transmit ordinary referral information, such as the referring page and an affiliate identifier, to the destination.
Once a visitor interacts with a third-party website, app, account, product, or connected device, that third party determines how it collects and uses information. This may include purchase information, account credentials, subscription information, precise pet location, pet activity or health-related measurements, mobile-device information, or communications with veterinary professionals.
Companion Safety Lane does not control and is not responsible for a third party’s privacy, security, retention, product, subscription, account, or customer-service practices. Review the applicable third party’s privacy policy, cookie notice, terms, and settings before creating an account, activating a device, connecting with a veterinary practice, providing information, or making a purchase.
Data Retention
We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected and for legitimate legal, security, editorial, tax, accounting, and business needs.
Retention considerations include:
Visitor communications: Retained as needed to respond, complete follow-up, document a request, or maintain a reasonable correspondence record.
Editorial corrections and source materials: May be retained longer when needed to document factual verification, corrections, permissions, publication decisions, or the history of an article.
Professional and vendor records: Retained as needed to manage the relationship, meet contractual or accounting obligations, and resolve disputes.
Affiliate and transaction reports: Retained as needed for attribution, reconciliation, fraud prevention, tax, accounting, audit, and legal purposes.
Technical and security logs: Retained according to platform settings and as reasonably necessary to operate, secure, diagnose, and protect the website.
Privacy-request records: Retained as needed to document the request, verification, response, appeal, and legal compliance.
Legal records: Retained for any additional period required by law or reasonably necessary to establish, exercise, or defend legal rights.
When information is no longer reasonably needed, we may delete it, de-identify it, or allow it to be removed through ordinary system and backup cycles. Residual copies may remain temporarily in backups or archives until they are overwritten or deleted in the ordinary course.
Data Security
Companion Safety Lane uses reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect information under our control. Depending on the information and systems involved, these measures may include access controls, account-security practices, software and platform updates, service-provider safeguards, spam and malicious-traffic controls, backups, and procedures for responding to suspected incidents.
Access to nonpublic information should be limited to people and providers with a legitimate need to use it. We seek to avoid collecting information that is not reasonably necessary and discourage visitors from submitting sensitive information through ordinary email.
No website, email service, network, storage system, or method of electronic transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Visitors should use reasonable care and should not send passwords, financial credentials, complete medical or veterinary records, precise location histories, or other highly sensitive information by email.
Security Incidents and Required Notices
If we become aware of a suspected security incident involving information under our control, we may investigate, take steps to contain and remediate the incident, preserve appropriate records, coordinate with service providers, and notify affected individuals, regulators, law enforcement, or other parties when required by applicable law.
Nothing in this section guarantees that every event will constitute a legally reportable breach. Notification obligations depend on the type of information, the nature and likelihood of harm, the people affected, and the applicable laws.
Privacy Rights and Choices
Depending on where you live and subject to applicable definitions, thresholds, and exceptions, you may have the right to request that we:
Confirm whether we process personal information about you.
Provide access to or a copy of certain personal information.
Disclose the categories of information collected, the sources, the purposes for using it, and the categories of recipients.
Correct inaccurate personal information.
Delete certain personal information.
Restrict or object to particular processing.
Provide certain information in a portable format.
Honor an applicable opt-out of sale, sharing, targeted advertising, or qualifying profiling.
Limit certain uses or disclosures of sensitive personal information.
Withdraw consent when processing is based on consent.
Obtain information about automated decision-making where applicable.
Appeal a decision concerning a privacy request where applicable.
Receive equal service and not be unlawfully discriminated against for exercising a privacy right.
These rights are not absolute. We may deny or limit a request when permitted by law, including when we cannot reasonably verify identity, do not hold information linked to the requester, must retain information to comply with law, need the information for security or fraud prevention, or must preserve it to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
Submitting a Request
Email companionsafetylane@gmail.com with the subject line Privacy Request. Describe the request and identify the email address or communication previously used with Companion Safety Lane, if relevant.
Please do not send government identification, account passwords, financial information, or other sensitive verification material unless we specifically explain why it is necessary and provide an appropriate method.
Verification
We may request information reasonably necessary to confirm identity, locate responsive records, prevent fraud, and protect information from unauthorized disclosure. The required verification will depend on the nature of the request and the sensitivity of the information involved. Information submitted for verification will be used for verification, security, recordkeeping, and legal compliance.
Authorized Agents
Where permitted by law, an authorized agent may submit a request for another person. We may require proof of the agent’s authority and may ask the individual to verify identity or confirm the authorization directly. We will not disclose personal information to someone who cannot demonstrate appropriate authority.
Appeals
If applicable law provides a right to appeal and we deny a request, the requester may appeal by replying to our decision or emailing the privacy contact with the subject line Privacy Appeal. The appeal should explain the basis for reconsideration. We will review and respond within the period required by applicable law.
Supplemental Notice for California Residents
This section supplements the rest of the policy. It applies only to the extent California law applies to Companion Safety Lane and the information involved.
During the preceding 12 months, Companion Safety Lane may have collected the following categories of personal information described by California law:
Identifiers: Such as a name, email address, IP address, and online identifiers.
Customer-record information: Such as contact information voluntarily provided in correspondence.
Commercial information: Such as limited affiliate transaction, referral, product-category, commission, return, or cancellation information received from affiliate partners.
Internet or electronic-network activity: Such as browsing, referral, page-interaction, device, cookie, and website-usage information.
Geolocation information: Limited to general location inferred from an IP address; Companion Safety Lane does not request precise geolocation.
Professional or employment-related information: Such as a veterinarian’s, researcher’s, manufacturer representative’s, vendor’s, or other professional’s title, organization, credentials, and business contact information.
Inferences: Limited conclusions that may be drawn from website use or communications to improve content, understand general interests, prevent misuse, or administer relationships.
Contents of communications: Information contained in an email or other message when Companion Safety Lane is the intended recipient.
The sources, purposes, and categories of recipients for this information are described throughout this policy. We do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about individuals.
Companion Safety Lane does not sell personal information for money. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of individuals under 16. If California law grants a particular right to a requester and applies to Companion Safety Lane, we will process a verified request as required by law.
Companion Safety Lane does not offer a financial incentive, price difference, or service difference in exchange for the collection, retention, sale, or sharing of personal information.
California’s “Shine the Light” law may permit a California resident to request certain information regarding disclosure of personal information to third parties for their own direct-marketing purposes. Companion Safety Lane does not knowingly disclose personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing. Questions may be submitted through the privacy contact above.
Other United States State Privacy Rights
Residents of certain U.S. states may have rights to access, correct, delete, and port their information, opt out of certain uses, and challenge qualifying profiling, with nondiscrimination protections. The availability and scope of these rights depend on the law, whether the law applies to Companion Safety Lane, the type of information, and applicable exceptions.
We will respond to valid requests as required by applicable law. If a state regulator provides a method for submitting a complaint after an appeal is denied, information about that method may be included in the appeal response when required.
Children’s Privacy
Companion Safety Lane is a general-audience website intended for adults. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13.
We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of children or teenagers. If a parent or legal guardian believes a child has provided personal information to Companion Safety Lane, the parent or guardian should contact us. We will review the request, take reasonable steps to verify the relationship, and delete or otherwise address the information where required by law.
International Visitors
Companion Safety Lane is operated in the United States. Information may be processed in the United States and in other locations where Wix, email providers, affiliate partners, or other service providers operate. Those locations may have privacy laws that differ from the laws where a visitor lives.
Where European Economic Area, United Kingdom, Swiss, Canadian, or other applicable privacy law grants additional rights, an individual may contact us to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, portability, withdrawal of consent, or other relief provided by law.
An individual may also have the right to complain to the data-protection or privacy authority responsible for the place where the individual lives or works. We encourage individuals to contact us first so we can attempt to address the concern directly, but doing so does not limit a legal right to contact an authority.
International transfers may be supported by a service provider’s approved contractual terms, adequacy decisions, contractual safeguards, consent, or another mechanism recognized by applicable law. The mechanism depends on the provider, location, and processing involved.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in website functions, technologies, service providers, affiliate relationships, information practices, or legal requirements.
When changes are made, we will revise the Last updated date at the top of the policy. Material changes may also be communicated through a prominent website notice, cookie control, direct communication, or another method required by law. If applicable law requires consent before a material change is applied to previously collected information, we will seek that consent.
We will not apply materially different practices retroactively when doing so would be unlawful or inconsistent with prior privacy commitments.
